Floods happen when water exceeds its normal boundaries—rivers overflow, rains exceed drainage, the ocean breaches the shore. In dreams, floods represent situations or emotions that have exceeded their proper bounds and now threaten to overwhelm everything.

The flood might represent emotions you've been containing that have finally broken through. Grief held back too long, anger suppressed until it explodes, love that overflows its careful containers. What have you been damming that has now burst its banks?

Alternatively, floods can represent external circumstances overwhelming your life. Work flooding into personal time, problems multiplying beyond capacity, situations growing beyond control. The boundaries you maintained are failing.

Consider your relationship to the flood. Are you above it (safe but watching disaster)? In it (directly experiencing the overwhelm)? Trying to hold it back (futile resistance)? Swimming with it (going with the overwhelming flow)? Each position reveals your current stance toward the overwhelm.

Floods also cleanse. In many traditions, floods clear the old to make way for the new. Your flood might be destructive but also preparatory—washing away what needs to go before new growth can occur.
